KAI Unzen - A Night of Relaxation and Elegance

We arrived at KAI Unzen, another stylish hotel.

The decor is inspired by the lava and steam of the region, reflecting the natural beauty of the nearby Unzen Jigoku.

We opted for a room with an open-air bath, allowing us to enjoy a private soak while overlooking the Unzen Jigoku. The room was featured a dedicated sofa and area for after-bath relaxation. After enjoying the open-air bath, we rested for a while, savoring the serene moment.

The room’s pendant light, now a focal point of my interest when visiting each KAI hotel, was designed to represent drops that appear when the steam of geysers is released into the air. The drops become colored due to underground minerals, creating a beautiful and unique effect.

We arrived a bit later today, so unfortunately, it was already dark outside. Nonetheless, we still took a relaxing bath with glasses of beer. What an excellent time!

Dinner was another memorable experience. It began with Oniyarai Onsen Sempei, accompanied by a rite involving braised pork. On the Sempei, there was a piece of paper with an illustration of an Oni (demon) on it. To drive away the Oni, we tapped on it with a small hammer, breaking the Sempei beneath. This was a delightful reenactment of a traditional ritual.
